Physical Education (PE)

Exercise is the key to not only physical health, but to peace of mind.

Why PE?

Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in a child’s overall development, supporting not only physical health but also emotional wellbeing, social skills, and cognitive growth. Through regular participation in PE, children build strength, coordination, and fitness, while also learning the value of teamwork, resilience, and fair play. PE encourages healthy habits that can last a lifetime and provides a positive outlet for energy and stress. It also enhances concentration and classroom performance, helping children to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

PE Intent

An RPS child will develop a positive relationship to physical health, activity and personal well-being. The children will develop their understanding of competition including fair play, sportsmanship, teamwork, passion and playing within the rules and a sound knowledge of basic skills to access specific sports.

Key PE knowledge and skills

Our PE curriculum develops key skills across three pillars: physical competence, cognitive understanding, and social-emotional growth. Children build fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, while also developing balance, coordination, and agility. As they progress, they learn to apply these skills in a variety of sports and activities, fostering teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking. Through dance, gymnastics, games, and outdoor challenges, pupils gain confidence, understand fair play, and learn to reflect on their performance. Our inclusive approach ensures all children, including those with SEND, are supported and encouraged to participate, helping them lead healthy, active lives and develop a lifelong love of movement and sport.

How PE is taught

PE is delivered through a rich and inclusive curriculum that combines expert coaching with team teaching. Sports coaches from Your Sports Education work alongside class teachers to deliver high-quality, engaging lessons that build physical skills, confidence, and enjoyment. Lessons are structured to develop agility, balance, coordination, and teamwork, while also promoting the school’s core sporting values such as determination, respect, and self-belief.
