Why MFL?
At RPS, we believe that learning a foreign language opens doors to the wider world and helps children become confident, curious, and culturally aware individuals. By introducing languages such as Spanish from an early age, we give children the chance to develop valuable communication skills, build their confidence, and foster a love of learning about other cultures.
MFL intent
An RPS child will be inspired to develop a love of another language which provides an opening to different cultures. The children will develop the foundation of listening, reading and writing and learn how to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity in order to express their ideas and thoughts.
Key MFL knowledge and skills
Our MFL curriculum is designed to be engaging, inclusive, and progressive, helping children build their skills year by year.
Key Knowledge and Skills Include:
-
Listening and Speaking: Children learn to listen attentively to spoken language, join in with songs, rhymes, and stories, and take part in simple conversations. They practise pronunciation, ask and answer questions, and express opinions using familiar vocabulary and phrases.
-
Reading and Writing: Pupils read and understand simple texts, recognise key vocabulary, and begin to write short phrases and sentences from memory. They learn to describe people, places, and actions, and use dictionaries to support their learning.
-
Grammar and Vocabulary: Children explore basic grammar rules such as gender, verb forms, and sentence structure. They build a growing vocabulary that allows them to communicate ideas clearly and confidently.
-
Cultural Understanding: Through stories, celebrations, and traditions, children gain insight into the cultures of French- and Spanish-speaking countries, helping them develop respect and curiosity for the wider world.
How MFL is taught
MFL lessons are fun, interactive, and often include songs, games, stories, and role play to help children practise speaking and listening in a new language. These experiences not only support language development but also enhance memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Learning another language also helps children better understand their own language and builds a strong foundation for future learning in secondary school and beyond.
